Quickly becoming a staple of 3D printing across the globe, ABS – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – the filament is a must-have. From hobbyists to professional scientists and industry sharks, ABS filament is being used to create everything from phone cases to cells and organs. The versatile and quality filament that is being produced makes ABS a crucial part of 3D printing.
ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, is a type of plastic. It is a thermoplastic that is known to be molded easily into a multitude of different shapes and sizes when heated but hardens evenly when it is cooled. This thermoplastic is heat resistant, very durable, and flexible. The exact features of different brands and models of ABS filament vary from option to option.
The features of ABS filament range far and wide. ABS filament has many features of other plastics and has many different uses. Because ABS filament is created from special formulas engineered by different companies, the features can vary from company to company.
Scientists have been using ABS filament to create potentially lifesaving printing and tools that can be used. At-home printers have been using ABS for anything from Legos and bicycle helmets to chairs and appliances. ABS filament is also playing a large role in cosplay and live-action role-play.
There are two main ways in which ABS filament demonstrates weather-resistant tendencies. The first way is through heat resistance, and the second is through durability. ABS filament is known to be able to withstand heat particularly well. There are some filaments like the Polymaker ABS filament, the HATCHBOX ABS filament, and the Inland ABS 3D printer filament that are especially heat resistant and able to withstand heats up to and beyond 240 degrees Celsius. Being able to withstand heat like that makes them more weather resistant to the hot temperatures. There are some ABS filaments that are extremely durable and impact resistant. The Anycubic ABS 3D printer filament, the HATCHBOX ABS filament, and the Inland ABS 3D printer filament are excellent ABS filaments when it comes to toughness, strength, and durability. These ABS filaments will not easily crack in windy conditions outdoors.
While ABS filaments do have some weather-resistant tendencies, there is a notable lack of weather resistance in some areas. The two main areas in which ABS lacks in weather resistance are with regards to cold temperatures and moisture.
In very cold temperatures, ASB filament is not as weather resistant. Temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius are not beneficial to the material. As with other plastics, ASB filament may become bitter and crack more in colder temperatures, especially outdoors. When it comes to moisture in the air and humidity, many 3D printing filaments, including ABS filament, tend to have an increase in the water absorption coefficient. The water absorption of these filaments makes the ABS filament not ideal for precipitation conditions.
While ABS can withstand very hot temperatures, when it comes to UV and ultraviolet resistance, there have been some issues. There have been studies surrounding filaments and their UV resistance, and while ABS has shown higher reflective rates than PLA filaments, ABS filament still has a tendency to have a more yellow tint when exposed directly to the sun for long periods of time.
The reason that ABS filament gains a distinctly yellowing hew in the sun comes down to the material itself and the chemical composition.
The butadiene in ABS filament is integral to its composition, but when exposed to UV accelerates the photolysis reaction rate or the rate at which materials decompose under a light. Butadiene is also known to oxidize quickly, which may also cause the ABS filament to change colors. Overall, ABS filament may not be the best filament to use in situations of high UV risk.
ABS filament does have excellent filament from some of the best ABS filament brands, like the SUNLU ABS 3D printer filament, which is easy to use. However, as a whole, ABS is known to be one of the more difficult-to-use filaments. It can be quite challenging, especially if you are new to filaments and 3D printing. To begin with, it is a stiff material to work with. It also requires high temperatures and a hotbed surface. For medium to large projects, you will need an enclosure.
Some common troubleshooting that is often necessary with ABS is fixing a clogged nozzle or a filament jam, warping, poor layer adhesion, and a foul odor.
There are several ABS filaments that are great for preventing filament jams, including but not limited to the eSUN ABS+ 3D printer filament, the SUNLU ABS 3D printer filament, and the AmazonBasics ABS 3D printer filament.
The recommended temperature for each specific ABS filament will be slightly different based on the formula’s composition. Always check the packaging or guide for appropriate temperatures. Too hot of a temperature can melt the filament and create strings or a poor-quality surface. If the temperature is too cold, it can fracture the filament and have poor layer adhesion or nozzle blockages.
Many of the filaments on our list above are 1.75 in diameter as they are easier to find. 1.75 diameter has a wider range of filaments, you may have more control and precision over the filament that you are using, and you may have a faster print speed. For instance, the BUMBAT ABS 3D printer filament is a 1.75 diameter filament.
Some filaments can go all the way up to 3.00 in diameter. This diameter generally has a bigger nozzle type and can be used up faster. It also has a higher bending resistance, and it’s less likely to jam. The 3.00 diameter is frequently used in higher quality printers. The highest filament on our is the MG Chemicals Glow in the Dark Green ABS filament.
